Two excerpts are presented here. The first, from Øverland's Norwegian History, describes Harald's consolidation of power. The second, from An Outline of Norwegian History (University Press, 1991), offers a more nuanced view of Harald as one significant step in the medieval unification of Norway — rather than its sole architect. The truth, as so often, appears to lie somewhere between the heroic legend and the merely administrative.
